Sectors of Intervention: Agriculture, Shelter, Warehousing and Transportation (technical mapping and assessment), Private Sector Mapping. Humanitarian Needs Assessment
The market assessment of the shelter, warehousing and agricultural sectors in Erbil, Dohuk, and Sulaymanieh, Iraq and Al-Hasakah and Ar-Raqqah, Middle East, as well as a needs assessment performed in Al-Hasakah and Ar-Raqqah, Middle East. The results seek to inform the program development and project activities of Global Communities (GC) in relation to providing relief and promoting resiliency in the region.
The needs assessment employed a mixed-method approach of quantitative and qualitative data collection, including a secondary data review, semi-structured Key Informant Interviews (KIIs), in-depth employer survey questionnaires, and focus group discussions (FGDs) with targeted groups. The profile of the present living conditions and needs of the affected population, as well as the underlying factors that continue to influence and cause vulnerabilities within the affected population, were analyzed through the perspectives of households, local council members, and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs).
The market assessment of the shelter/construction and agriculture sectors within the designated regions of Iraq and Middle East was guided by a transparent and open approach, using desk reviews an analysis of existing information, market surveys, KIIs, and FGDs. To collect information on the size and capacity of different transport companies and their actual abilities to work within the assessment area, semi-structured KIIs were employed.
Needs Assessment: The needs assessment was conducted in Northern Middle East alongside the market assessment. Given the highly kinetic nature of the conflict within Middle East and the number of humanitarian agencies with ongoing programs, the results include a demographic profile of the affected population, the underlying factors that do and could, in the future, influence their vulnerability, and the specifics of their present living conditions. The key findings of this assessment are considered critical to the design of future programming in Middle East. The needs assessment also provides a greater depth of understanding around the level and nature of needs in Al-Hasakah and Ar-Raqqah, as well as which resources individuals have at their disposal. The assessment uncovers the main challenges that residents face and their own recommendations (see the stakeholder recommendations).
Shelter Market Assessment: The findings presented in this document outline the overall strength and capacity of the shelter/construction market in the target areas of both countries in order to help GC understand current trends and better support future sector-specific programming. As part of this assessment, i-APS has mapped the main companies, capacities, and current limitations in the sector.
Agriculture Market Assessment: The agriculture market assessment results outline the overall strength and capacity of existing agricultural markets. This report presents a detailed overview of the available resources and market actors to determine if and how a market-based approach to economic recovery is feasible at this point in time.
