Regions: Africa AsiaEurope and EurasiaLatin America and the CaribbeanMiddle East and North Africa

The aim of our economic growth activities is to provide sustainable livelihood opportunities to those who have little income with the goal of reducing poverty in the community. Our support starts with research and assessments, and ends with vocational training or business development services for small to medium businesses.

An example of our approach to economic growth is restoring agriculture in Syria as a sustainable economic activity by supporting farmers and processors. We provide business advisory services to help remove barriers to growing and selling produce to generate more income, thereby contributing to the recovery of the Syrian economy and agricultural landscape.

01 Research and Assessments

We conduct market assessments and value chain assessments to understand and strengthen the context in which new small and medium enterprises operate. We collect information from value chain actors such as tradesmen, state agencies, farmers, financial institutions, donor organizations, and scientific research experts to understand demand and supply, trends in prices and inflation, competitiveness of particular products and services, the gaps and weaknesses in the value chain, and the constraints that businesses face. We present our findings to relevant stakeholders to gather feedback on proposed action plans and project design.

After conducting research to understand the type of businesses and skills most suitable for the context, we support local vocational training centres to provide training to community members that is specifically tailored to the needs of different industries and business sectors. In addition to providing the training centers with the support they need, including management, certification and accreditation processes, i-APS also helps graduates with job placement, access to available micro-loans for new businesses, and business development services.

03 Business Development Services for Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises

We believe that micro, small and medium-sized businesses play vital roles in economic recovery and development. Based on our market assessments and value chain assessments, we provide business development services to improve their competitive advantage, such as mentorships, internships and apprenticeships:

  • One-to-one or group mentoring of entrepreneurs by local and regional experts to strengthen capacity across defined technical and/or functional areas
  • Internships and apprenticeships for established business owners, including female business owners, to work with emerging and potential business leaders
